The question of situation was then discussed and Mr. Sloss
referred to the recommendations of an earlier Committee that the
25 University should be rebuilt on a larger site. He said that.
after those recommendations had been made, however, a new and
larger technical Committee had shown how, properly used, the
existing site could accommodate a very much larger University and
still leave more space than is at present available for games and
amenities. It would mean that a great part of the existing buildings
would have to be demolished and rebuilt in larger and more compact
units but he thought that there was everything to be said for
redeveloping the présent site.
Professor Hinton hoped that the New Territories would be used
for any necessary development in the future. and meanwhile for
playing fields and summer schools.
Sir George Moss emphasised the role that inter-university
sport might play in promoting friendly relations with China.
The Committee then reverted to the question of finance.
15 Mr. Cox thought it would be lamentable if in face of the
developments to be (expected or Chinese universities the future
showed an ineffective and struggling institution in Hong Kong.
He pointed out, however, that no assistance could be expected from
the resources of the Coloniel Development and Welfare Fund since
clearly this fund was established for the needs of Colonial peoples
and could not be regarded as appropriate for a University designed
primarily for the Chinese.
